Seed Oil Tracker: the app that tells you which restaurants fry in seed oils and how many grams are in your meal

Seed Oil Tracker is a free iPhone and Android app that tells you which restaurants fry in seed oils and how many grams of seed oil are in each menu item, for 630+ US chains and 1,200+ chains worldwide, with the grams worked out from each chain's own nutrition panel and disclosed cooking oil.

The two questions it answers

Does this restaurant fry in seed oils?

Search any chain. You get the oil its kitchen actually cooks in, in the chain's own words, a letter grade from A to F on average seed oil per item, and the cleanest real order on the menu. Chick-fil-A, for example: peanut oil for the chicken, canola in dedicated fryers for the waffle fries.

How much seed oil is in this meal?

Every menu item carries a gram figure, and the order builder adds a whole meal up: main, side, sauce, drink. Skip the mayo and the number changes. Hold your finger on any item and the app shows the nutrition panel line and the arithmetic the number came from.

A worked example: one Chick-fil-A meal

ItemSeed oil PUFA
Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich
Panel: 18 g fat, 3.5 g saturated. The filet is pressure cooked in peanut oil.
5.7 g
Large Waffle Fries
Panel: 35 g fat, 5 g saturated. Dedicated canola fryer.
11.2 g
Chick-fil-A Sauce (1 cup)
Panel: 13 g fat, 2 g saturated. Soybean oil is the first ingredient.
7.8 g
The meal24.7 g

Every figure above is worked out from Chick-fil-A's own published fat numbers and ingredient lists. The 12 count Grilled Nuggets are about 1.2 g, the lowest real meal on the menu.

Chick-fil-A is fully documented: every item on its menu is on the chain's own numbers.

Where the numbers come from

Restaurant chains do not publish seed oil grams, but they do publish total fat, saturated fat and trans fat for every item, plus an ingredient list and usually the frying oil. Those three fat numbers set a hard ceiling on how much polyunsaturated fat an item can hold, and the ingredient list says which fat it is. That is arithmetic, not guessing, and the app keeps the arithmetic as a receipt on every item it applies to. 21,000+ menu items carry one today.

96 US chains are fully documented: every item on the menu comes from the chain's own published fat numbers rather than our estimate. The full list is in the app under Settings and on the methodology page.

Where a chain publishes nothing, the app estimates from the chain's disclosed oil and the item's published nutrition, and says so. A real measurement always beats our estimate: the grocery scanner reads the label from Open Food Facts and USDA first and only estimates if both miss. Full method on the methodology page.

Common questions

Is there an app that tracks seed oils?

Yes. Seed Oil Tracker is a free app for iPhone and Android that tracks grams of seed oil across restaurant meals and groceries. Log what you ate against a daily goal, see the ring fill up, and get a weekly recap. It covers 1,200+ restaurant chains and 76,000+ menu items, plus a barcode scanner for packaged food.

Which app tells you if a restaurant uses seed oils?

Seed Oil Tracker. Search any of 630+ US chains (or chains in Canada, the UK and Australia) and the app shows the oil the kitchen actually cooks in, in the chain's own words, a letter grade from A to F, the cleanest real order on the menu, and the seed oil grams in every item.

How much seed oil is in a Chick-fil-A meal?

About 24.7 g of seed oil PUFA for this meal: Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich 5.7 g (the filet is pressure cooked in peanut oil), Large Waffle Fries 11.2 g (dedicated canola fryer) and Chick-fil-A Sauce (1 cup) 7.8 g (soybean oil is the first ingredient). Each figure is worked out from Chick-fil-A's own published fat numbers. The 12 count Grilled Nuggets are about 1.2 g, the lowest real meal on the menu. Every Chick-fil-A item in the app carries this kind of receipt.

Where do the seed oil gram numbers come from?

From the chains. A restaurant chain publishes total fat, saturated fat and trans fat for every item, plus an ingredient list and usually its frying oil. Those numbers set a hard ceiling on how much polyunsaturated fat an item can hold, and the ingredient list says which fat it is. The app stores that arithmetic as a receipt you can read by holding your finger on any item. 21,000+ menu items carry one. 96 US chains are fully documented, meaning every item on the menu comes from the chain's own numbers rather than our estimate. Where a chain publishes nothing, the app estimates from the disclosed oil and labels it an estimate.

Does Seed Oil Tracker work for groceries?

Yes. Scan a barcode and the app reads the label from Open Food Facts and USDA FoodData Central first, and only estimates if both miss. 10,000+ grocery items are already graded, and an ingredient checker flags seed oils in any pasted ingredient list, offline.

Is Seed Oil Tracker free?

Yes. The app is free to download and the main features are free: report cards, menu lookups, the order builder, meal logging and the barcode scanner. An optional premium subscription adds extras and supports the project.

Which countries does Seed Oil Tracker cover?

Restaurant data covers the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and North Macedonia, with a country picker in Settings. The app itself is available in over 170 countries on both stores, and the grocery barcode scanner works anywhere.

Is Seed Oil Tracker on Android?

Yes. The same app, built from the same code with the same database, is on Google Play. See seedoiltracker.com/android for the install link.
