1. Join the tester group

   Google only lets the beta install on accounts that are on an approved list, and this group is that list. Use the same Google account your phone uses for the Play Store.

   Open this on your Android phone and tap Become a tester. Play then gives you the normal install button.

   Get the app

   Do step 1 first. If you open this link before joining the group, Play will say the app is not available for your account.

Why there is a beta at all

Google requires every new developer account to run a closed test with at least 12 testers for 14 continuous days before an app is allowed on the public Play Store. That is the only thing standing between this and a normal Android launch.

So joining genuinely helps. Install it, leave it on your phone for two weeks, and you have moved the launch forward. That is the entire job.

Common questions

Is Seed Oil Tracker available on Android?

Not publicly yet. It is in an open beta on Google Play right now, and anyone can join for free. Google requires a new app to run a closed test with at least 12 testers for 14 days before it can be listed publicly, so the beta is the way in until that finishes.

How do I get the Android beta?

Two steps. First join the tester group at groups.google.com/g/seedoiltracker-beta with the same Google account your phone uses for the Play Store. Then open play.google.com/apps/testing/com.seedoiltracker.app on your phone and tap Become a tester, which gives you the Play Store install link.

Does the Android beta cost anything?

No. The full app is free for the whole test, including everything that is normally premium.

Why do I have to join a Google Group first?

Can I join from outside the United States?

Yes. The beta is open in 177 countries. The restaurant data is US chains, so the app is most useful in the US, but anyone can install and test it.

Is my email address visible to other testers?

No. The tester group is configured so only the group owner can see the member list and member email addresses, and only the owner can post to the group. The app itself never receives or stores your email at all, it only keeps an anonymous account ID and the username you pick.

What do I have to do as a tester?

Install it and keep it installed for at least 14 days. That is the whole requirement. Feedback is welcome but not required.

When will it be on the Play Store normally?

As soon as the closed test clears Google’s bar: 12 testers opted in for 14 continuous days, then a production review. The faster the beta fills up, the sooner it launches publicly.
