KFC does not fry in the same oil everywhere. In the 14 countries where the chain itself states its fryer oil, it names 5 different oils or blends. Every row below comes from what KFC has said for that country: its own page, ingredient list or a company statement.

What KFC says in each country
| Country | Fryer oil the chain states |
|---|---|
| Australia | Canola (rapeseed) and sunflower oilWhat our record sayscanola/sunflower blend, canola first, grade unstated: KFC Australia's own December 2024 ingredient list prints "VEGETABLE OIL: Canola, sunflower, antifoaming agent (900a)" under every fried product and under the chips, and kfc.com.au itself says only "canola oil". The chips' 9.6% saturated share fits a high-oleic canola/sunflower blend but does not prove the grade. Corrected 2026-09-18 from "100% Australian-grown high-oleic canola oil (switched from palm oil in 2012; supplied by MSM Milling/Manildra Group)" because the chain discloses neither the 100% claim nor the grade today, and sunflower is in the blend. |
| Canada | Canola (rapeseed) oil (a high-oleic grade is named)What our record sayshigh oleic low linolenic canola oil in the fryer - the chain's own Ingredients Listing entry reads "High oleic low linolenic canola oil, dimethylpolysiloxane, TBHQ", and the fries print a 5.9-7.7% saturated share, which fits. The coleslaw dressing and the Buttermilk Ranch are soybean-led, and the gravy uses a high-monounsaturated sunflower oil. Tightened 2026-09-18 from "100% non-hydrogenated canola oil" to the chain's own wording and to name the two non-canola items (Nutrition Information guide updated November 17 2025 plus the matching Ingredients Listing). |
| Czechia | Sunflower oilWhat our record sayssunflower oil in the open and pressure fryers, per KFC's Czech spokesman quoted by Vitalia.cz (2019-10-15: 'V KFC se používají otevřené (klasické) a tlakové (uzavřené) fritézy se slunečnicovým olejem'); the chain's own Czech nutrition/allergen table names no oil |
| France | Canola (rapeseed) and sunflower oilWhat our record sayssunflower and rapeseed oil blend in the fryers, no palm oil: KFC France's FAQ says 'l'huile de friture utilisee est un melange d'huiles de tournesol et de colza. Pas d'huile de palme chez nous !'; the fries panels print about 10% saturates (Moyennes Frites 0.9 g of 9.2 g), consistent with it |
| Germany | Canola (rapeseed) and sunflower oilWhat our record sayssunflower and rapeseed oil: KFC Germany's own product guide gives the breaded chicken as '...pflanzliche Oele (Sonnenblume, Raps)...' and the fries as 'Pommes frites, frittiert [Kartoffeln, pflanzliche Oele (Raps, Sonnenblume in veraenderlichen Gewichtsanteilen), Dextrose]'; all chicken products share the fryers; dips and sauces are rapeseed-oil based |
| India | Rice bran oilWhat our record saysRice bran oil per KFC India's own announcement (switch from palm oil to locally sourced rice bran oil across all Indian restaurants, Q1 2018; https://hungryforever.net/kfc-india-announces-switch-rice-bran-oil/). Caution: the chain's 2026 booklet prints fatty-acid columns whose fries (PUFA 1 g, saturates 5 of 11 g) look palm-like, so the current oil is not certain. |
| Italy | Canola (rapeseed) and sunflower oil (a high-oleic grade is named)What our record sayschain-stated blend: every fried item in KFC Italia's 'Libro degli ingredienti' (Revisione del 25-08-2026) lists 'olio di frittura (olio di semi di girasole, olio di semi di girasole ad alto contenuto oleico, olio di colza, agente antischiuma (E900))' = sunflower, high-oleic sunflower and rapeseed; estimates use a blended PUFA share of about 0.37 of the fryer fat |
| Moldova | Canola (rapeseed) and sunflower oil (a high-oleic grade is named)What our record sayssunflower, high-oleic sunflower and rapeseed in the fryers: KFC Moldova's own ingredient document gives every fried item 'ulei pentru prajit [uleiuri vegetale (floarea soarelui, floarea soarelui high oleic, rapita, in proportii variabile), antispumant E900]'; sunflower oil in the chicken marinade, rapeseed in the coatings, soybean oil in the Heinz mayonnaise |
| Poland | Canola (rapeseed) and sunflower oilWhat our record sayssunflower and rapeseed oil: KFC Polska's ingredient list gives the chicken coating 'oleje roslinne (slonecznikowy, rzepakowy)', the fries 'ziemniaki, olej slonecznikowy; oleje roslinne (slonecznikowy, rzepakowy)' and the churros fryer oil 'frytura: oleje roslinne (slonecznikowy, rzepakowy)'; rapeseed in the mayonnaise and pancakes; coconut fat in the dessert sauces |
| Romania | Canola (rapeseed) and sunflower oil (a high-oleic grade is named)What our record sayssunflower, high-oleic sunflower and rapeseed oil in the fryers: KFC Romania's ingredient statements give the chicken 'ulei pentru prajit [uleiuri vegetale (floarea soarelui, floarea soarelui high oleic, rapita, in proportii variabile), antispumant E900]', sunflower oil in the chicken marinade and rapeseed in the coating |
| South Africa | Palm oilWhat our record sayspalmolein (palm olein) in the restaurant fryers for chicken, wings, strips, pops; chips 'Potatoes, Vegetable Oil (Palm Fruit)' finished in the same palmolein; sunflower seed oil in the Colonel dressing, coleslaw dressing, seasonings and milk & egg mix |
| Switzerland | Canola (rapeseed) and sunflower oilWhat our record sayssunflower and rapeseed oil blend, chain-stated: 'Unsere Pouletfilets, Pouletteile und Pommes frites werden mit einer Oelmischung aus Sonnenblumen- und Rapsoel frittiert' |
| UK | Canola (rapeseed) and sunflower oilWhat our record saysFries/hash browns: "Vegetable Oil (Sunflower, Rapeseed) in varying proportions" per the Signature Fries ingredient list (shared fryer with popcorn chicken); chicken historically fried in high-oleic rapeseed since the 2011 switch off palm. As of 2026-09-22 kfc.co.uk no longer serves that Signature Fries ingredient list (the fries FAQ accordion on the nutrition page is empty); the August 2026 guide names only a shared vegetable oil for fries, hash browns, popcorn chicken and bites, and the fries print 8.2% saturates (fits the sunflower / rapeseed blend, does not separate conventional from high-oleic). |
| Uzbekistan | Canola (rapeseed) and sunflower oilWhat our record saysVegafray blend: refined deodorised sunflower and rapeseed oils with antifoam E900 (KFC Uzbekistan allergen annex lists "O'simlik yog'i - Vegafray aralashmasi: kungaboqar, raps" as the frying medium for chicken; same blend presumed for fries) |
We track KFC in 95 more countries where the chain does not state its fryer oil. We do not guess for those here.
On our record, with no source quoted
Our record names an oil for these countries, but the record does not quote where the chain says it. We show them apart so you can tell the two kinds of row apart.
| Country | Fryer oil on our record |
|---|---|
| U.S. | Soybean oilWhat our record sayslow-linolenic and refined soybean oil (fried chicken); some items in canola/soybean oil blends |
Why does the oil change at the border?
The chain does not say. None of the pages we read gives a reason for using one oil in one country and a different one in the next. So we ask the question and leave the answer open: if KFC can fry in one oil there, why not here?
What we can say for sure is narrower. Each row is what the chain published for that country, read on or before October 13, 2026. A statement can be years old, so open "What our record says" for the wording and any caution we noted. Spot one that is out of date? Tell us in the app with "Wrong? Let us know" on that chain.
