McDonald's Fry Oil by Country

McDonald's does not fry in the same oil everywhere. In the 39 countries where the chain itself states its fryer oil, it names 7 different oils or blends. Every row below comes from what McDonald's has said for that country: its own page, ingredient list or a company statement.

At a glance

animal fat palm, peanut or a mix seed oil. How the oils differ is on Compare oils.

What McDonald's says in each country

CountryFryer oil the chain states
AustraliaCanola (rapeseed) and sunflower oil
What our record says

Canola oil blend (canola oil, high-oleic canola oil and sunflower oil) for frying fries, hash browns, nuggets and other fried items; palm-oil-free since February 2015. Confirmed 2026-09-18 by the chain's own Australian ingredient lines - McNuggets canola plus sunflower, the McCrispy patty "Vegetable Oil (Canola, Sunflower)", buns canola, fries 8% saturated. One item the palm-free line does not cover: the Hot Apple Pie pastry margarine names palm and soybean oil.

AzerbaijanSunflower oil
What our record says

sunflower oil only in the restaurant fryers: McDonald's Azerbaijan FAQ 'Qizartma ucun palma yagi istifade olunur? Xeyr. Qizartma ucun yalniz gunebaxan yagi istifade olunur' (Is palm oil used for frying? No. Only sunflower oil is used for frying); fries 'hidrogenlesdirilmemis bitki yaginda qizardilir' (fried in non-hydrogenated vegetable oil). High-oleic is not stated, so conventional sunflower is assumed

BahrainCanola (rapeseed) and sunflower oil
What our record says

sunflower and canola oil blend in the fryers at all GCC restaurants (McDonald's GCC statement on its Qatar site, 2017: 'completed the transition of its cooking oil to a sunflower and canola oil blend at all of its 500+ restaurants in the GCC')

CanadaCanola (rapeseed), soybean and corn oil (a high-oleic grade is named)
What our record says

canola/corn/soybean oil blend (fries, hash browns, nuggets, fried chicken): the chain's own per-item statement reads "high oleic low linoleic canola and/or canola, corn, soybean, hydrogenated soybean oil"; hydrogenated soybean oil also carries the fry flavour. Corn added 2026-09-18 from that statement. The chain's own Canadian fries print a 13-14% saturated share, far above pure canola's ~7%, so the blend is not canola-dominant in practice and those rows are pooled as an unspecified vegetable oil.

CroatiaCanola (rapeseed) and sunflower oil (a high-oleic grade is named)
What our record says

blend of non-hydrogenated vegetable oils in the restaurant fryers, chain-stated: the Croatian fries statement reads 'mješavina nehidrogeniziranog biljnog ulja (suncokret, visoko oleinski suncokret, uljana repica, visoko oleinska uljana repica)' (sunflower, high-oleic sunflower, rapeseed, high-oleic rapeseed); McNuggets/McChicken/McCrispy coatings 'biljna ulja (suncokret, uljana repica)'; rapeseed (and sunflower) in the buns and rapeseed in most sauces

FijiPalm and canola (rapeseed) oil
What our record says

Chain-stated but in conflict: McDonald's Fiji's FAQ says 'We use only 100% vegetable oil (palm-olein)' for frying, while its own item pages print canola for the fried foods ('Potatoes, Vegetable Oil (Canola Oil) ... cooked in McDonald's Vegetable Oil blend'; 'Hash Brown is cooked in canola oil blend') and its printed nutrition panels for fries, hash browns and nuggets carry a saturated share (about 8% of the fat for fries) that fits canola, not palm olein (the FAQ says the food is imported mainly from McDonald's supplier in New Zealand). The locally breaded Hot & Spicy Chicken panel shows 34% saturated, which does fit a palm-olein fryer. Scored on each item's own label and panel: canola for fries, hash browns, nuggets and pie (higher-PUFA-wins); sauces are soybean oil (Big Mac sauce, McChicken sauce, mayonnaise, tartare) per the ingredient statements; bun and muffin oil is canola. If palm olein is ruled for the fryers, fried-item PUFA falls by about 60%.

FinlandCanola (rapeseed) and sunflower oil

The blend ratio is not stated, so fried items are scored at a vegetable-oil PUFA share (~0.58 of the oil fat), between rapeseed (0.32) and sunflower (0.68), leaning high per higher-PUFA-wins. We track McDonald's in 55 more countries where the chain does not state its fryer oil. We do not guess for those here.

On our record, with no source quoted

Our record names an oil for these countries, but the record does not quote where the chain says it. We show them apart so you can tell the two kinds of row apart.

CountryFryer oil on our record
U.S.Canola (rapeseed), soybean and corn oil

UKCanola (rapeseed) and sunflower oil

Why does the oil change at the border?

The chain does not say. None of the pages we read gives a reason for using one oil in one country and a different one in the next. So we ask the question and leave the answer open: if McDonald's can fry in one oil there, why not here?

What we can say for sure is narrower. Each row is what the chain published for that country, read on or before October 13, 2026. A statement can be years old, so open "What our record says" for the wording and any caution we noted. Spot one that is out of date? Tell us in the app with "Wrong? Let us know" on that chain.
